The Cold Process

Soap is a salt made from an acid and a base in a chemical process called saponification.

There are 4 different processes to make handmade soaps:

cold process, hot process, melt and pour, and rebatch.

Currently, I am only making my handmade soaps by the cold process.

My cold process soaps are produced from oils and butters (fatty acid triglycerides)

saponified with lye (sodium hydroxide, a strong alkaline base).

I dissolve the lye in distilled water, heat the oils, react (add) them together in a big bowl,

mix to light trace, add my fragrances, colorants, herbs, etc., and pour into a mold.

I leave it in the mold for 24 hours to cook, then I pop it out and cut it into bars.

After that, I leave the bars exposed to open air for 4-6weeks.

This allows completion of the saponification reaction and also allows the bars to harden.

The soaps are then ready to use!
